Aircraft Mechanic Army - The A&P Certification Program is part of the United States Air Force. This is for the majority of Air Force Licensed A&Ps seeking Military Aircraft Maintenance Technicians. The Air Force A&P Certification Program is a program that bridges the gap between the education, training and experience of an Air Force technician and the FAA entry requirements. FAA stands for Federal Aviation Administration. The program is a voluntary program.

To qualify as an A&P technician, a mechanic must be 18 or older, be able to read, speak and understand English, meet experience or education requirements, and pass a set of mandatory tests within 24 months. Another requirement includes meeting the mechanical parts section that applies to the mechanic rating sought. For parts where mechanics must use their military experience, the minimum experience requirement set forth in 65.77 under Mechanic Experience Requirements may be waived.

Condition 65.77 Mechanics' Experience states that each applicant applying for a mechanic's certificate or rating must submit the correct graduation certificate. A certificate of completion by a certified aviation maintenance technician or documentary evidence may also be presented. The second requirement for mechanic experience is that the mechanic must have 18 months of hands-on experience with procedures, practices, tools, machine tools and equipment. These practical experiences should be used in the maintenance, construction and replacement of aircraft. It can also be used for the construction, maintenance and replacement of power plants. The final requirement is that a mechanic must have 30 months of practical experience while performing duties in both aircraft and power plant ratings.

When mechanics graduate from technical schools, they are assigned temporary assignments while learning line operations. This is where they spend a year. While there for a year, they learn how to service engines, and learn how to service hydraulic systems. They also complete rotational inspections on aircraft and powerplant components. After completing their temporary duties, they go to a phase work center, corrosion control work center, or aircraft shop. Power station stores are also used. The Air Force A&P certification program comes in a four-level division. This is a training and experience program. It helps mechanics develop their knowledge, helps them prepare for FAA exams, and helps them get certified.

The Air Force A&P certification program can take mechanics into a variety of careers. With the experience gained, the aircraft mechanics will become a chief mechanic. They can work for the government, civil, military and private contract industry. They can also become chief inspectors and shop supervisors. WASHINGTON - When Chief Petty Officer 4 Melinda Herder enlisted in the service in 1985, she had three choices: administrative assistant, parachute pack and aviation mechanic. After speaking with his father, who was in the Navy, he chose to become an aviation mechanic.

"When I went to my advanced individual training, there were two women I can remember," he said. "The other woman in the class with me... was a few years older than me, so she became a big sister to me and she really looked out for me during that time. We are friends to this day a."

As an aviation mechanic, Herder repairs and installs electrical and electronic equipment on helicopters. After four years of active duty, he was transferred to the District of Columbia National Guard.

"I was able to bring my experience and knowledge to active duty and do the same job at the [DCNG] aviation support facility. Within a year, I was hired full time as an electronics mechanic," Herder said.

Herder continued to advance in his career through aircraft transitions and additional training, leading him to assume supervisory roles as a senior NCO.

"That was my goal. I didn't think about going beyond becoming a sergeant first class," he said. "A warrant officer encouraged me to submit a warrant officer candidate package, and it took off. The next thing I know, I was at school being blocked."

Along with becoming a warrant officer came new opportunities in leadership. He was recognized for his abilities in his career field and as a leader.

"Until 2018, I was the supervisor of the allied stores. Then I was chosen to act as the facility maintenance officer, which is great," Herder said. "I operate 10 aircraft: six UH72 [Lakotas] and four UH60 [Black Hawks]."

For the past 2 1/2 years, the mission's completion rate has been well above standard. When he was appointed maintenance officer, he was given a month to improve the program. After observing the team, he returned to the maintenance bases and made subtle changes in efficiency and responsibility. Not only did the team meet the standards after 30 days, but they also achieved a 96% mission capability rate within six months.

"A full year and a month [later] we report a rate of 100% fully capable of missions for about five weeks," Herder said. "That's unheard of. I think it puts the D.C. Guard's aviation maintenance program in the top 10% of the 54 states and territories."
