Glock 17 Different Gens - Confused by all the Glock models? You're not the only one, but we're here to walk you through!

Glock is the most widely used service pistol today, which is quite remarkable for a company that was founded to make curtain rods. Gaston Glock had no experience making guns, but had experience making polymers. He assembled top European handgun experts, created a prototype of the Glock 17 in 1982, and the rest is Austria's glorious history.

Glock pistols are polymer-framed, semi-automatic, short-recoil, bolt-action, striker-fired handguns. Well, most of them are - the rimfire G44 is a blowback operated gun and it's the only gun that breaks the mold. Glock pistols come in tons of different calibers and sizes. These were not the first polymer frame pistols, but they were the first polymer pistols to be very successful.

The G17 was the first model to be produced and was designed to meet a need in the Austrian army. The specific needs of the Austrian army inspired the development of the weapon and defined Glock pistols to this day. The Austrian Army needed a safe, lightweight, high-capacity, reliable semi-automatic pistol, and the Glock filled that need.

Glock has a simple way of naming their pistols. Each model is assigned a number after the letter G, which apparently stands for Glock. The numbers have nothing to do with the firearm itself and may seem arbitrary to most people – for example, the G45 is not a 45 caliber pistol, it is actually a 9mm.

Designs are assigned numbers as they are started, not in the order in which they are released. So although the G20 and 21 started development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 were released first.

The G17 hit the streets at a time when manual safeties on handguns were the norm. Glock's Plastic Fantastics had no manual safety, but that didn't mean they were unsafe. Glock refers to its pistols as the Glock Safe Action Pistol, referring to the three independent built-in safeties.

The trigger safety is the famous little doohickey that sits in the center of the trigger. Press your finger on the trigger safety while pulling the trigger, so without activating the trigger safety, the trigger cannot be pulled.

The safety pin prevents the firing pin from advancing when the striker is cocked. When the trigger is pulled, the trigger rod pushes the firing pin safety up and out of the way. If you release the trigger before firing, the firing pin safety will automatically fall back into place.

The fall arrester is a device that does exactly what you think. Firing the gun ensures that it cannot be fired. When you pull the trigger, the trigger bar lowers the safety ramp and releases the firing pin.

Glock is currently in its fifth generation. New generations come out and Glock makes changes, both external and internal. There is no timeline for when the Glock generations end or begin, they improve as needed.

Glock 17 Gen 5

The release of a new generation does not always mean that the previous generations are gone. New and older generations of Glock are often produced side by side.

There are also guns outside of the designated Glock generations. There are some weapons everywhere, and the generation tokens are used to determine which generation a weapon might be missing. Some weapons are also divided into generations, most commonly between Gen 2 and Gen 3 weapons. Glock fans often refer to them as Gen 2.5 guns.

Gen 1 - The first ever Glocks on the market. Plain and simple: they are weapons that work. Gen 1 consists entirely of one pistol, the Glock 17.

Gen 2 - Glock added different sizes and standards to the Gen 2 models. A metal plate with the serial number was added, the guide rod system became a one-piece design, dice were added to the front and rear of the grip, and the magazine base plate was changed.

Gen 3 - Third generation is where rails were a standard choice on larger guns than subcompacts. Finger heads have been added to the grip, and scallops cut into the left and right sides of the frame, which acted as thumb rests.

Internal changes included a cross pin above the trigger pin to relieve the locking block. The extractor also stood upright when the chamber was loaded, acting as a loaded chamber indicator.

Gen 4 - With the Gen 4, Glock made the pistol grip slightly smaller and added a modular backstrap system to change the size of the grip. The grip also had a more aggressive texture and the magazine release was reversible for lefties.

The Gen 4 also incorporated a double spring recoil rod assembly that reduces felt recoil. Gen 4 also introduced MOS guns that allowed easy mounting of optics.

Gen 5 - Gen 5 is the newest generation of Glock. These pistols have seen the finger grooves removed, the magazine well flared for faster reloading, the trigger guard cut high relief for a higher grip, and the slide is now ambidextrous.

In addition, Glock added a new match-grade barrel to the guns, and the cross pin above the trigger guard has also been removed.

Now that you have the basics, we can move into specific models, categories and more in Part 2!
