military spouse ptsd

Military Spouse Ptsd - I have been married to an Air Force officer on active duty for 15 years. He was last diagnosed with PTSD in 2010.

I'm really frustrated because people don't talk about PTSD. I believe it is a forgotten disease as forces have dwindled and wars have ended.

I am very happy with my pregnancy, but my husband is still not well. Sometimes I think his symptoms are worse - nightmares, flashbacks, anger and mood swings, but the worst part is that he has pulled away from me. Our relationship is basically non-existent and I don't know what to do to change it. We have tried couples therapy and the husband has been in therapy for about five years.

Ptsd Study Seeks Male Military Spouses

I don't think any of the professionals understand my suffering. What about wives or other spouses? What can I do to make my marriage last and stand the test of time?

Thank you for writing and sharing your story. I know it's hard. I'm sorry you forgot about yourself and your husband.

After reading your letter, I understand what you need to do with your husband, how to connect with your husband and have an intimate relationship. Anyone at any age can get PTSD. Millions of Americans, including war veterans, children, women and men. Death of a loved one, war and war, car accident, etc. witnessing such frightening and unpleasant events can lead to PTSD.

There are many symptoms of PTSD, just like what your spouse is going through. The most effective is simultaneous therapy (individual and group) and medical treatment. Many people report that they have had several therapy sessions but stopped because, for example, they did not like the therapist.

George Mason University researchers hope that continued study of the effects of traumatic stress on the home lives of soldiers will lead to the military addressing the issue — and not just for one type of family unit.

Study participants will be asked to fill out several basic questionnaires to confirm eligibility and provide demographic information, then participate in a 30- to 60-minute phone interview within two weeks of submitting the information, Renshaw said. "When you do research, you only learn about what you ask for," Renshaw said. "If you don't ask the right questions, you might be missing the boat."

A New Theory Of Ptsd And Veterans: Moral Injury

According to fiscal year 2014 demographics, the military has 64,835 female soldiers, 34,189 of whom are on active duty. The first number is about 12.3 percent of the married force, which includes 464,275 male soldiers.

With those numbers, Renshaw said, many peer surveys lump men in with women or leave them out altogether when making policy recommendations.

This research can help determine whether certain programs or treatment options are "more or less for them." "For example, they may have more difficulty finding a support network. . . . In some areas, they may struggle more than military wives."
