Fast forward to 2020, H&K is now making another play for the MP5 niche with their own lifelike semi-auto version of one of the most legendary firearms ever produced.
In response to the constant demand from purists and enthusiasts for a true-to-life MP5, H&K finally granted everyone's wish in the form of the SP5, a follow-up to the company's SP5K, released just over five years ago to muted commercial success.

Built at the company's Oberndorf plant in southwestern Germany (as the SP5K), the SP5 is essentially a semi-automatic pistol with an 8.86-inch barrel that stays true to the original MP5 design, including the standard roller-delayed blowback - operating system.
Arriving at this year's SHOT Show industry and media day, I found myself staring at the growing lines at the H&K tents, where shooters were given a quick run through of the guns on display before handing over magazines and being encouraged to give the company's firearms a vortex.
Having played with a number of differently configured MP5s over the years, I found myself apprehensive yet excited about H&K's latest offering.
At first glance, the SP5 looks almost identical to the MP5, but without the select fire markings and with an extended safety selector switch. All models are sold with an 8.86-inch cold-hammer-forged marine barrel made of gun steel, known for its durability.

The SP5 I fired had a detachable Picatinny rail above the receiver, plus an Aimpoint Micro H-2 red dot sight. The gun was set up as a short-barreled rifle with an old fashioned folding MP5 stock, although it should be noted that the SP5 is sold as a handgun, so all standard NFA laws apply when adding a round to the gun.
After locking the charging handle back and loading a magazine, I was rewarded with a clean and fresh “HK slap” as I placed my palm down on the charging handle to jerk it free and send the lock home .

Shooting the SP5 felt smooth as butter, with a crisp trigger pull, very little recoil impulse and extremely comfortable ergonomics. In other words, it felt right at home - just like all the service/service configured MP5s I've tried in the past.

The pistol's nimble function was due in no small part to H&K choosing to use a modified F-type bolt carrier group, originally developed as a reinforced solution for French police and armed forces that required overpressure (+P ) wanted to use ammunition.
As you can reasonably guess, the quality of H&K comes at a high price. SP5s are listed with an MSRP of $2,799 and are sold with a pair of 30- or 10-round magazines.
But for the purists determined to get their hands on something as close to the MP5 as possible, they'd struggle to find a better or more authentic offering than the SP5.
