H&k P7 Review - Over the course of the sixty-seven years that Heckler and Koch have been in business, several firearms have been produced by the company to be considered perennial. Chief among such designs would be the MP5 and or the G3, weapons that would be used fifty years after their creation. While many guns and sub-machine guns may come to mind first, HK has a history of producing guns that define the concept of utility and are nearly unbreakable.
For many collectors, the P7 is a sought-after example of HK's power design. P7M13 The P7M13 is a rare version of the P7 that some consider the penultimate series. Originally designed as a higher capacity P7, the M13 variant uses a double stack magazine capable of holding thirteen rounds of 9mm ammunition. Unfamiliar with the design of the P7, the pistol is based on the Barnitzke system, a gas-delayed blower system that uses reducing gases fired from each round to make the operating rod fire a cyclic slide. In many ways this system is similar to modern piston-action rifles (the AK and AR variants), but in other ways the system is unique.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about the P7M13 is that it was once a contender as the standard issue pistol of the US Army. While it was eventually chosen in favor of the Beretta M9, the P7M13 still finds use among some of the capital organizations today. Introduced in 1982, the M13 was produced until around 2000, the rest of the P7 line completed production in 2008.
Since I was lucky enough to get my hands on a new M13 cartridge (d. 1988), I decided to try it out first because I had already read about the fine power going out of the hollow shaft, as well as the unique press mechanism. had made the P7 series famous (at least among HK enthusiasts). First impressions did nothing but confirm what I had read. While I don't consider myself to be a professional shooter by any means, I am more than competent when it comes to paper rounds. Having said that, after getting around the first magazine of ammunition, I found that I could consistently stay in the 10 ring, with only one or two occasionally running to the edge, at a distance of between seven and fifteen yards. While I was able to do this with most other pistols in a neat and tidy condition, what stood out to me was how easy it was to create a repeatable point of impact. To say that I would be happy with a smaller purchase.
Although not as common for pistols, it is still possible to find quality holsters made for the P7 series.
As an HK fan myself, I have managed to collect examples of most of HK's popular handguns (USP series, MK23, HK45), but the P7 was always a variant that had eluded me. Whether it's because of some unfounded suspicion of guns, or the excuse that the P7 is too expensive, I'll be adding a few more to my collection. I'm glad to say that I finally took the plunge and added this excellent example to my collection.

The H&K'P7 may not be one of those, where the end result is "greater than the sum of its parts", but its parts alone are quite impressive. In no particular order, here are the features that I know are separate from the other guns...or when it was designed in 1976.

Probably the most notable feature of the P7, and the one that has earned the nickname associated with staple guns, is the P7 trigger only, with a steel webbing bar attached to the front of the grip strap.

The backstrap is also lightly textured, which I especially notice because it's not the standard texture you see every day on a steel gun.
It takes somewhere in the range of 10 to 15 pounds (depending on how you measure) of force to push the shear bar into the grip - usually moving the front strap - but only about 1.5 pounds of force to keep it down, which means. once it is lowered, it is not noticed that it is caught in the usual fire.
This striker is fully rotated so the trigger is then a real action along with the unique function of releasing the striker.
Release the cocking lever and the striker releases immediately and safely. Hold it and the slide action reload the striker after each shot, so it works like any other single pistol - to be clear, you don't have to release the cock lever before each shot and reload to press it, but you can do it the first time you hit stubbornly.

The normal procedure is to squeeze the lever to hold your fire, then pull the trigger to fire. However, it also works in reverse: pull the trigger and press the trigger to fire. This makes it more foolproof in an urgent gunfight.
The pressure regulator also helps your chances in a long gun fight, acting like a slide release. When the P7 slide slides to low, you will naturally release the lever to drop your exact magazine and insert a new one. Squeezing the cockerel again sends the slide home with the pistol cocked and ready to rock and roll. Alternatively, you can pull back the slide and release it.
