LOS ANGELES - The cancer epidemic hasn't stopped federal officials in Los Angeles from working hard to track the thousands of illegal gun mods entering the U.S. from other countries.

Often referred to as 'Glock Converter switches', these converters cost less than a dime but can turn a Glock pistol into an automatic weapon.
Representatives from the ATF and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are particularly concerned that with gun sales on the rise, these weapons could end up in the hands of criminals.
“It's metal, actually three pieces. "They're behind the scenes and they're turning that gun into a fully automatic rifle," said Stephen Galloway, ATF Special Administrator in Los Angeles. "If you have a magazine that big, you're carrying about 30 rounds on the ground or you're going to shoot at one time."
Galloway said the ATF is tracking shipments of these devices from overseas, but some are being made in Southern California.

"We've seen cases here in LA that are manufactured in-house or in a machine shop," Galloway said.
Jack Branhorst, owner of Red Gun Shop, has never used a key, but he can pick up a gun in seconds and show us exactly how one loads it.
"I can't speak for what people think. We get a lot of customers here who want things that people don't have — they see it in the movies. They want to be the bad girl on the block, but it's important. And very dangerous," Branhorst said.
Branhorst says he hasn't had any customers ask about these adapters since they only work on Glock handguns, but some have expressed interest in full-size firearms.

"I've had idiots asking how to turn a rifle into the perfect car, and I've happily sent them on their way," Brankhorst said.
"It's a very scary thing to say from the perspective of a veteran highway officer who knows someone is carrying a gun and I'm not in a position to compete with that," Galloway said.
Galloway added that in one of the ATF cases, they found 4,000 diversion devices smuggled into the United States and recovered more than 3,000 of them. But hundreds of shipments are still out there and made by other manufacturers.
"These are dangerous and we're doing everything we can to get off these roads," Galloway said. Houston Police Chief Troy Finer recalls the horror of watching video of the crash: a gray sedan smashing into a barrier, the driver ejecting. Then part of the fire started when the gunman opened fire on the three officers.

Federal officials called the charges "a sobering reflection" of the dangers law enforcement officers face on the job — and another reason for the state's rising homicide rate over the past few years.

Buyers must pay special taxes and pass a strict background check, Yates said. The law prohibits the purchase and exchange of weapons made before 1986, and federal law prohibits the possession of missiles. Federal law also allows gun shop owners or licensed federal firearms licensees to purchase or manufacture machine guns or revolvers.
