Sauer Rifles Reviews - The 6.5 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) has steadily gained in popularity since Hornady introduced it in late 2017. Shooters aren't the only ones taking notice, either. More and more hunters are learning about its effectiveness and versatility. As a result of demand, gun manufacturers are bringing alternatives to the table. At the end of 2018, SAUER was the first to offer a mass-produced rifle in this new cartridge. SAUER, a highly respected German gunmaker that has been producing handguns for over 267 years (yes! That's right), has partnered with Hornady to chamber a rifle in 6.5 PRC that is quickly gaining a following.
There is a good reason for this rapid rise in popularity. Modeled after Hornady's extremely popular 6.5 Creedmoor, the 6.5 PRC offers many of the same features shooters and hunters love about that cartridge. It is very accurate, it fires 6.5 mm bullets that offer many extremely effective options, high ballistic coefficient. In addition, it is easy to load manually and at the same time there is a large supply of factory ammunition. It also offers a reasonable amount of recognition that appeals to almost any individual who pulls the trigger (from children to adults; men and women). The 6.5 PRC significantly increases velocity over the Creedmoor, allowing hunters to extend their effective range and become comfortable with the round for larger big game species such as elk and bear.

BARRELED ACTION: Built on site at the Sauer factory in Isny, Germany, the receivers are crafted using the latest CNC milling technology, which helps produce Sauer's famously smooth bolt action. Barrels produced in the same facility are cold hammer forged and come with a performance guarantee of five shots under MOA. The 100 Ceratech model also comes coated in an Ice Gray Cerakote, which provides resistance to corrosion and scratches.
STOCK: Ultra robust ERGO MAX case, equipped with control in crucial places on the handle and tip for better control in all weather conditions. The shirt also features an EVER REST action liner to ensure an optimal fit for the running action to produce repeatability of subsequent shots.
TRIGGER: The Sauer 100 differs from most factory rifles with a user-adjustable one-stage trigger that ranges from 2.2 to 4.4 pounds of pull.

PERFORMANCE: As a long-time shooter of another 6.5 (.260 Rem) cartridge, I was excited to see what this rifle and the new round had to offer. I tested the gun with Hornady factory ammunition in 143gr ELD-X Precision Hunter and in 147gr ELD-M Match.
TESTING: Because the rifle was new when I received it, I spent the first 32 rounds breaking in the barrel in the process. Between each of the first 10 shots, I cleaned the rifle, then followed with four three-shot cycles ending with cleaning the barrel. Finally, I finished with two cycles of five shots with cleaning afterwards. Using ELD-X ammunition during this process cleans the barrel easily every time. Once I was done with the break-in process, I was ready to move on to a more serious test. I must also note that during this process the accuracy of the rifle and ammunition showed a very strong potential.
Sauer rifles come with a performance guarantee of 1 MOA or better at 100 yards, and ELD-X and ELD-M ammunition far exceeds that guarantee. I ran five shot groups much closer to 0.5 MOA. The 143 ELD-Xs averaged 2,950 fps and the 147 ELD-Ms averaged 2,800 fps. This is a very significant jump over the velocities standard with the .260 Remington and the popular 6.5 Creedmoor. While the recoil was definitely more prevalent than my .260, it wasn't what I would classify as significant. With the barrel coming threaded with a protector as a standard option, it's very easy to add a suppressor or muzzle brake if desired, which is exactly what I did when I moved from the 100-yard bench to the field for several tests. . When I added my SilencerCo Harvester to the Sauer 100, the recoil was virtually eliminated.
Moving to my favorite range shooting location, stepping away from the solid concrete bench, where I had steel targets to choose from from 200 to 800 yards, I knew I would get a better feel for how this combination of rifle and ammunition would perform in hunting situations. . After going from prone with a bipod, to prone on the pack, and finally sitting down from the shooting sticks, I found the rifle easy to maneuver and was able to get into a comfortable shooting position. Shooting clear from the bipod and bag, I was extremely steady against the most distant targets. When I switched to shooting with shooting sticks, I found that it was ultimately not as stable as I prefer at distances beyond 500 yards. This is most likely due to the extremely light nature of the rifle, which is something to consider. That makes it extremely useful for mountain packing, but you'll sacrifice a bit in the stability department when you're trying to shoot longer distances from less-than-perfect shooting positions.

BOTTOM LINE: The 6.5 PRC is quickly gaining popularity among shooters in various fields, including hunters and competitors and for good reason. With Hornady's support, you can feel confident that their quality factory ammunition will be readily available for both activities. The Sauer 100 Ceratech is a great rifle for the big game hunter of the future. It's light enough (weighing in at just under 7 pounds) to easily carry even the most strenuous hunt, yet durable enough to withstand any weather conditions you may encounter hunting through the fall and winter here in the West. Coupled with quality components that equate to a very accurate shooting rifle at a very attractive price point, I would suggest that this is a rifle that should be on anyone's short list when purchasing a new light all-purpose rifle. Not only would it be a great application for hunting high mountain sheep or mule deer, the power this new 6.5 PRC provides is a very worthy consideration for moose at moderate distances.

"Reasonably priced" is not a word usually associated with rifles made by the German firm JP Sauer & Sohn. First, they must pay the wages of all the highly skilled European workers. Then there's the fact that the Germans don't like to skimp on features and performance when it comes to their firearms. The result is that not only will you get an awesome gun when you pay for one, but your bank account will take a hit—and you can consider yourself lucky if the four-figure price you paid starts with the number 1.
So when Sauer announced they were going to make a bolt-action rifle with the un-Teutonic price of $699, I couldn't help but wonder what corners they had to cut to pull it off. After spending a few months with the .308 they sent me to evaluate, I'm not sure what magic they used to make such a nice rifle at that price. What corner cutting I could find was minimal.
For example, the rifle does not come with high-quality wood and ornate checkers, so they saved some money. But the black synthetic action of the Classic XT is by far the best I've seen on a rifle in this price range. Sauer based the stock geometry on that of their high-end rifles: the S101 and S404. It has a slight bump in the palm that fits my hand well and is shaped in such a way that my finger lines up perfectly with the trigger. Even better, there's plenty of room under the large bolt handle for your trigger finger, so you'll never twist your shooting hand when you get into position to take a shot. This seemingly obvious design element is one that many gun manufacturers overlook.

The forend of the stock has a Schnabel forend. Again, it felt good in the hand and contributed to the nice balance and handling characteristics of the rifle. If I could change anything about the stock it would be the position of the pivot pin forward so that it protrudes directly from the tip of the forend. As is, it fits exactly where the shooter's main hand wants to go.
